Shane and I have sold two homes during our thirty-three years of marriage. Putting a home on the market is not for the faint of heart. People traipsing through your home, peering into every closet, searching every nook and cranny to see if your home is worthy of becoming theirs. The cleaning begins and doesn’t end until the papers are signed and the keys are exchanged.
If only I had inherited the cleaning gene from my Granny and my mother. But alas, I did not. So before we placed a home on the market, I changed my habits and pretended to be my mother. If we had lived like we were moving all along, this would not have been so difficult.
Living like we are moving is helpful in the natural, but even more important in the spiritual. At times I forget there is more than this temporal life on earth; I forget Heaven is my eternal home.
Do I live for eternity or do I only live for my time on this big blue planet?
“Keep your shirts on; keep the lights on! Be like house servants waiting for their master to come back from his honeymoon, awake and ready to open the door when he arrives and knocks. Lucky the servants whom the master finds on watch! He’ll put on an apron, sit them at the table, and serve them a meal, sharing his wedding feast with them. It doesn’t matter what time of the night he arrives; they’re awake – and so blessed!
You know that if the house owner had known what night the burglar was coming, he wouldn’t have stayed out late and left the place unlocked. So don’t you be slovenly and careless. Just when you don’t expect him, the Son of Man will show up.”
Luke 12:35-40 (Message)
Whether Jesus returns during our lifetime, or if we live out the number of our days, time is short.
Am I living “ready?” If Jesus returned today, will I have fulfilled His plan for my life or will He catch me totally off guard?
When I live like I am moving, I am doing what the Lord has put me on the planet to do. We make our lives count by being smack-dab in the middle of His plan for our lives.
“For we are God’s [own] handiwork (His workmanship), recreated in Christ Jesus, [born anew] that we may do those good works which God predestined (planned beforehand) for us [taking paths which He prepared ahead of time], that we should walk in them [living the good life which He prearranged and made ready for us to live].”
Ephesians 2:10 (Amplified)
We may choose to live in the same house our entire lives, but there is no doubt one day we will be moving from the earth. Let’s make Heaven our destination and take as many people with us as we can. Let’s be ready in every way possible.
Let’s live like we are moving.
