“Can a woman forget her nursing child, and not have compassion on the son of her womb? Surely they may forget, yet I will not forget you. See, I have inscribed you on the palms of My hands; your walls are continually before Me.” Isaiah 49:15, 16 ESV
It’s been thirty-plus years since I became a mother, but I can still remember the instant love I felt for my baby. When my second baby arrived twenty months later, I wondered if I would experience the same love again. The moment I laid eyes on him, it was a definite yes. I loved becoming a mother. My babies were first and foremost in my heart and on my mind.
The question this scripture asks is unconceivable to me. I cannot imagine a mother forgetting her child, or not having love and compassion for them. But of course, there are some mothers who do forget and do not have compassion. God knows He must answer this question, assuring us even if a mother forgets her child, He will not forget us.
It seems like God’s promise to not forget us should be enough, but He takes it one step further.
He literally has tattooed our face upon His hands. I have never expected my face to be tattooed on anyone’s body, so what a surprise God Himself is the One to do it! He tattoos our face on His hands, so we are always in His line of sight. When He looks at His hands, there we are.
He is always thinking of us. He will never forget us.
There is no greater comfort than this.
