“For I am persuaded that neither death nor life, nor angels nor principalities nor powers, nor things present nor things to come, nor height nor depth, nor any other created thing, shall be able to separate us from the love God which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.” Romans 8:38, 39 (NKJV)
Paul is writing to God’s people in Rome. Chapter 8 ends with Paul giving a list of things that cannot separate them from the love of God. I imagine their ears perked up for those last couple of verses, because let’s face it, the worst thing that could happen would to be separated from God’s love.
The Bible is written for us also, so we can also take Paul’s words to heart. Let’s have a look at that list.
Things that cannot separate us from the love of God:
- Death
- Life
- Angels
- Principalities
- Powers
- Things present
- Things to come
- Height
- Depth
That seems to cover it all, but just to be sure, Paul adds one more thing.
- Anything else in all creation.
I have been told we are the only ones who can separate ourselves from God’s love, but I no longer believe that to be true. I think we can be included in number 10. “Anything else in all creation.” Our hearts may wander from Him, but His love will never stop.
“Where can I go from Your Spirit? Or where can I flee from Your presence?
If I ascend into heaven, You are there; if I make my bed in hell, behold, You are there.
If I take the wings of the morning, and dwell in the uttermost parts of the sea,
Even there Your hand shall lead me, and Your right hand shall hold me.” Psalm 139:7-10 (NKJV)
Seems to me God’s love follows us everywhere.
We have no reason to fear losing God’s love. He loved us first and He loves us best. And there is nothing we can do about it.
