Our former Golden Retriever, Solomon, pushed ahead to get out our backdoor first; but occasionally, I snuck out while he napped or was otherwise preoccupied. When I got out alone, you can be sure the next time Solomon went outside, he sniffed and retraced every step I had taken without him.
As Solomon ran around the yard one day, tracking my footprints, I thought of the Gospels. This may be a crude example, but I learn through simple things. Jesus walked the earth long before we arrived, yet we can trace the steps of Jesus through the words of Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John. We learn where Jesus walked and what He did. We read His words and find out Who He really is.
“The Word became flesh and blood, and moved into the neighborhood. We saw the glory with our own eyes, the one-of-a-kind glory, like Father, like Son, generous inside and out, true from start to finish.” John 1:14 (MSG)
Not only can we follow the life of Jesus in the Gospels, the entire Bible from Genesis to Revelation reveals Jesus. In fact, Jesus said the Scriptures spoke of Him.
“You search the Scriptures because you think they give you eternal life. But the Scriptures point to me!” John 5:39 (NLT)
Solomon had the ability to learn where I had been when he had not been with me. Likewise, though we weren’t alive when Jesus walked the earth, we have not missed out on knowing Him. The Bible is all about Jesus.
We can track the footprints of Jesus simply by reading His Book.
