“God is in control” is something I often hear, especially when someone is experiencing a difficult situation.
When things are not going well, we may assume it is God’s plan rather than considering if we might have something to do with it.
Tests and trials come to all of us, yet difficulties can be a result of wrong choices we have made. Maybe we should say, “I am in control.”
Is it possible we are the problem? It can be easier to look on the outside for the problem, at others or at God; but maybe we should begin by looking on the inside of ourselves.
“Today I have given you the choice between life and death, between blessings and curses. Now I call on heaven and earth to witness the choice you make. Oh, that you would choose life, so that you and your descendants might live!” Deuteronomy 30:19 (NLT)
God makes it clear He has given us the power to choose. Our options are life or death. Blessings or curses. And then He tells us what we should choose. “Oh, that you would choose life!” It’s like an open-book test. Choose A for life, or B for death. And then God says, “Pick A! Pick life!”
The only time we can truly say, “God is in control” is when we have completely surrendered control to Him. God does not take control from us. He only controls what we allow Him to control.
“Trust in the Lord with all your heart; do not depend on your own understanding.
Seek his will in all you do, and he will show you which path to take.” Proverbs 3:5,6 (NLT)
We trust God because He loves us, and He wants life and blessings for us.
As we look to Him, He shows us which path to take, but He does not make us take it. The choice is ours. We give Him control of our lives when we do what He says.
So, the next time we say, “God is in control,” let’s make sure He really is.
