“Lord, in the beginning you made the earth, and the heavens are the work of your hands.
They will disappear into nothingness, but you will remain forever. They will become worn out like old clothes,
and some day you will fold them up and replace them. But you yourself will never change, and your years will never end.” Hebrews 1:10-12 (TLB)
I was 17 years old and 600 miles from home, attending a mission-minded training school for 7 months. Not only was I missing my family, but some friends who had become like family to me were leaving. People were continuously coming and going at the school, and good-byes were a regular occurrence. I was tired of it.
“It is so hard to keep saying good-bye to people I love. Everything keeps changing and I don’t like it!” I complained to the Lord.
Immediately I felt the Holy Spirit’s comfort and heard His words. “Yes, life will always be changing in one way or the other. It is inevitable. But I never change.”
“Jesus Christ is the same, yesterday, today, and forever.” Hebrews 13:8 (TLB)
The Lord reminded me of His constancy. He would never leave. He would be with me wherever I was.
That made all the difference for me. I revisited that conversation many times throughout the remaining months of school; and it still comforts me today, with the many changes in life.
There is no greater comfort than knowing God never changes. He will never wake up in a bad mood and decide He is tired of us. He will never move out on us.
“Whatever is good and perfect is a gift coming down to us from God our Father, who created all the lights in the heavens. He never changes or casts a shifting shadow.” James 1:17 (NLT)
In all of life, this is one truth that keeps me grounded and gives me peace. God never changes.
