Usually when I head out our back door, Solomon, our Golden Retriever, pushes ahead and gets out first; but every once in a while I sneak out when he is napping or otherwise preoccupied. When I do get out alone, you can be sure the next time Solomon goes outside, he sniffs and retraces every step I took without him.
As Solomon ran around the yard the other day, tracking my footprints, I thought of the Gospels. Jesus walked the earth long before we arrived, yet we can trace the steps of Jesus through the words of Matthew, Mark, Luke and John. We learn where He walked and what He did. We read His words and find out Who He really is.
“The Word became flesh and blood, and moved into the neighborhood. We saw the glory with our own eyes, the one-of-a-kind glory, like Father, like Son, generous inside and out, true from start to finish.”
John 1:14 (MSG)
Though we can follow the life of Jesus in the Gospels, the entire Bible from Genesis to Revelation reveals Jesus. In fact, Jesus said the Scriptures spoke of Him.
“You search the Scriptures because you think they give you eternal life. But the Scriptures point to me!”
John 5:39 (NLT)
Solomon has the ability to find out where I’ve been when he was not with me. Likewise, we weren’t alive when Jesus walked the earth, but we have not missed out on knowing Him. The Bible is all about Jesus.
We can track the footprints of Jesus simply by opening the Book.
